Since the beginning of the film movement almost a hundred years ago, there have been critics championing (and also disparaging) this exciting medium. They have been such an integral part of the film movement that film students are still reading and referencing many of the greatest critics in their work. In this remarkable film, Director Gerald Peary has brought to life a subject that has never before been dramatized in such a way. He has skillfully illuminated the complex and fascinating history of these critics, highlighting how they have considerably transformed the world of film.

The film takes audiences through nearly 100 years of film history, from the early days when a critic was little more than a consumer reporter, simply letting readers know which films were significant to see, to the period of influence of such famous critics as Bosley Crowther from The New York Times. He also includes the critical debates between renowned intellectuals Andrew Sarris and Pauline Kael and concludes by discussing the fate of modern day critics, where the rules have clearly changed.

Film criticism is one of many professions that is rapidly shifting in today's global economy. With the economic downfall of so many national and regional newspapers, critics, once seen as a vital part of the film industry, are abruptly finding themselves out of work. So, the younger generation has taken to the internet, writing blogs and entire websites devoted to their thoughts on film, creating a new image of the film critic. Full of captivating interviews with Roger Ebert, Sarris, Kael, and Kenneth Turan, enticing use of archival footage and significant arguments about the fate of the critic, Peary has created a film that, while on one hand is historically important, is also truly entertaining.
