A Different World

If you weren't one of the lucky folks who got to see our special screening of the fantastic sci-fi/suspense powerhouse Another Earth during RiverRun this spring, we're really excited to see that a/perture cinema has brought the film back to Winston-Salem for a couple of weeks and given it a full theatrical run!  The film is playing now but it won't be around for long, so we highly recommend you get downtown posthaste to check it out while you still can.  It's been getting a tremendous amount of critical acclaim and good press, and several of the film's key people, including director Mike Cahill and star/co-writer Brit Marling graciously made the trip for RiverRun this spring and were truly a pleasure to have around, so we're thrilled that you all are getting another chance to catch up with the film.  Brit Marling is a force of nature in the lead role, and looks to be one of the most exciting up-and-coming young talents working on screen today.  There was a great interview with Brit and Mike Cahill on Filmspotting, one of our absolute favorite podcasts, a few weeks back, so if you're curious to hear a little bit from the creative team behind Another Earth that interview can be downloaded here.

Likewise we're excited about our next installment of Cineclub, which will happen on September 12th at a/perture, 8:00 showtime.  This month's film is the provocative and fun-loving documentary The People vs. George Lucas, a memorable and often tongue-in-cheek examination of the man behind the Star Wars mega-franchise and his polarizing legacy in the years following its debut.  Hopefully it doesn't take a Jedi mind trick to convince you to join us for the screening, but we reserve the right to implement this if necessary, so it's sort of out of your control at this point.  Several of our staff have summer homes in the Dagobah system so definitely don't underestimate us...

Elsewise we're just looking forward to ramping things up for RiverRun 2012, which will be upon us before you know it.  Filmmakers, keep in mind that our regular deadline for film submissions is coming up on October 3, so get those films in now and save a little money on submission fees.  We're just scratching the surface of this year's entries so far, but we're really thrilled with the caliber of content that we've previewed so far!  Enjoy this last few fleeting weeks of summer, and looking forward to interacting with you all in the coming months!
