Synopsis

Detective Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) is caught up in the racial tension of the South when he is arrested in Sparta, Mississippi, after the murder of a prominent businessman. Tibbs was simply waiting for his train; however, the confusion is soon resolved.  When local police chief Bill Gillespie (Rod Steiger) learns that Tibbs is the Philadelphia Police Department’s number one homicide expert, he reluctantly asks for his assistance. Tibbs’ life is clearly in danger but he perseveres in a highly charged and racially explosive environment until the killer is found.  The film was produced by The Mirisch Company, one of the most prolific and impressive production companies to ever be associated with United Artists. In the Heat of the Night was a critical and commercial success and received five Academy Awards including Best Picture. This marked the third Mirisch film for United Artists to receive that award in seven years. 4K Digital Restoration courtesy of Park Circus
