Virgílio lives a controlled and organized routine until one day he arrives home and listens to a disturbing message on his answering machine. It’s Clara, breaking up with him. The problem is not the break-up message but the fact he doesn’t have a clue who Clara is. His friends start to call to cheer him up. It seems everybody knew about his happy relationship–everyone except for him. Now Virgilio has only one choice: to find this mysterious woman. This nimble postmodern Brazilian rom-com, a co-production with Warner Brothers Studios, also features a cameo appearance from Cynthia Nixon of Sex and the City fame.

The family-fractured lives of a stubborn auto-mechanic, a retired widower, and a repressed college student meaningfully intertwine at Palace, a watering hole in the rural Indiana town of Upland. At the bar, both the distinct divide and the common ground between the locals and the more transient student residents of the college in town come into clear focus. The film’s artful narrative structure, divided into three discrete movements that gradually harmonize as the story unfolds, holds dear to the adage that “every stranger has a story.”

At the bar, both the distinct divide and the common ground between the locals and the more transient student residents of the college in town come into clear focus. The film’s artful narrative structure, divided into three discrete movements that gradually harmonize as the story unfolds, holds dear to the adage that “every stranger has a story.”
